Dry the bread on purpose

Start with plain bread cubes of similar size. Drying in a low oven makes their moisture more predictable than assuming bread left on the counter is ready. The cubes should feel dry on the outside without turning into deeply toasted croutons.

Soften the vegetables first

Allow the skillet mixture to cool to warm before it meets the egg. A very hot addition can start cooking the egg in patches. Mix the egg and broth thoroughly so the binder is distributed instead of collecting around a few pieces of bread.

Add broth in small amounts

Fold gently to preserve some cube shape, then let the bread stand briefly. Check again before pouring in the reserve: the liquid takes a little time to travel through dry bread.

The mixture should be moist throughout but should not leave a deep puddle at the bottom of the bowl. Transfer it loosely into the prepared dish. Pressing hard makes the center denser and can change how evenly it heats.

Bake separately and check temperature

The covered stage traps steam to warm the middle; uncovering gives the surface a chance to dry and brown. Use a thermometer to check for 165°F in the center. A browned top is not a substitute for that check.

This recipe is only for a baking dish, not a poultry cavity. Serve promptly, then divide leftovers into shallow containers and refrigerate within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or colder, use within 3 days, and reheat to 165°F. Human kitchen testing is still needed to confirm timing and preferred texture.
