Measure flour lightly
For a more consistent starting point, weigh the flour. If using a cup, stir the flour in its container, spoon it into the measure, and level the top. Scooping firmly with the cup can pack in more flour and make the batter thicker than intended.
Use baking powder rather than baking soda. They are not interchangeable spoon for spoon. Check that the powder is within its recommended use period before beginning.
Prepare the berries first
Wash fresh blueberries under running water and dry them well. Water carried into the batter changes the moisture balance. Remove stems and damaged fruit before measuring.
This version uses fresh berries. Frozen berries can change baking time and streak the batter, so they should be treated as a variation requiring its own checks rather than a promised identical result.

Fold, then stop
Combine the wet ingredients thoroughly before they meet the flour. After that, use a spatula to fold from the bottom of the bowl, stopping when there are no large dry pockets. Small lumps are less concerning than prolonged beating.
Fold the blueberries in last. Repeated stirring can crush them, tint the entire batter, and encourage you to add unnecessary flour to compensate for released juice.
Look beyond the timer
Muffin pans, liners, oven calibration, and portion sizes influence baking time. Start checking at the earlier end of the range. Test an area of crumb rather than pushing the toothpick straight through a juicy blueberry. If you find wet batter, continue baking and check again.
Use a rack for cooling so steam can escape around the bottoms. Removing paper liners while the muffins are very hot can pull away more crumb.
Keep handling safe
Do not taste raw batter or dust finished muffins with uncooked flour. Wash hands, utensils, and work surfaces after handling flour and eggs. Once cool, cover and refrigerate for this recipe's conservative 3-day storage recommendation, or freeze individually for later use. Cool fully before sealing to reduce condensation. These muffins contain wheat, egg, and milk; no allergen-free claim is made.
